University of Gothenburg
University of Gothenburg started as Gothenburg college of higher learning in 1891. The foundation was
what is today called the filosophical institution at GU. Gothenburg college of higher learning became University of Gothenburg in 1954 when it was united with Gothenburg college of higher learning. With the university-reform in 1977 a number of detached schools, such as the teachers school, the school of journalism, the school of music etc. where incorporated into GU.
The University of Gothenburg has 50 000 students by which 25 000 are studying full-time. The University
employs 5000 people and runs education and research in 60 institutions. This makes The University of Gothenburg one of Swedens most multifaceted universities. GU is cooperating closely with the city of Gothenburg, Chalmers and The University hospital of Sahlgrenska. In later years GU is focusing on increasing cooperation with the business world and international contacts.
