On the 14th of November; Sweden celebrates the National day of Ostkaka (Curd Cake), a dessert that has been around since 1600 and has made a guest appearance in several of Astrid Lindgren's stories. This national day was created by the association Ostkakans vänner in 2004 to increase awareness of the delicious dessert in Sweden and in Europe.

It's important to not confuse Ostkakan with the American cheesecake; the two desserts are made differently.

The cake is most often based on the ingredients milk, wheat flour and cheese rennet. Depending on what part of the country one is in, one can get different versions of the cake. Smålands version of Ostkaka is the most commonly found where one can find not only the main ingredients, but also almonds, bitter almonds, eggs, cream and powdered sugar that has been added. This can be found on the table during Christmas time for most people in Småland.

Eating the cake with whipped cream or ice-cream and jam of your chosen flavour is often the most common way of eating the dessert. But most Swedish natives has their own way of eating the cake. A suggestion is to find out one's own preferences in enjoying the dessert.
