Kontiki- a feeling of holiday…namnlos

If you’re already tired of the Swedish winter and want to try something different I suggest you take the tram to Botaniska Trädgården. Not to take a walk in Slottskogen or look at the nature in Botaniska Trädgården, but to forget about the darkness in the bar Kontiki. Sorrounded by exotic flowers, small huts of bamboo and with a coulorful cocktail in you hand you’ll soon feel like being in a South Sea island. As well as a restaurant which uses both cocos and mango as common ingrediences Kontiki has many interesting live acts, clubs and DJs of different genres. During the summer there is a big terasse outside which serve as a “after parc” chill out because of the closeness to Slottskogen, but aslo during the winter this small bar will make you happy!

Winter in Gothenburg’s parks

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Standing there on the frozen pond, I looked upon a world in black and white, with the only colours the blazing red of the setting sun barely visible behind the dark silhouette of the tree line a few yards away. There were tracks in the snow, some manmade, others made by animals, leading away from where I stood, across the pond and disappearing down the slope on the other side. At that time, I could hear nought but my own breathing. But that was about to change.

Me illustrating the geese's flight.

Me illustrating how the geese flew past me by flapping their wings very quickly.

The first line of birds came as if out of nowhere. One moment everything was quiet, the other the air was vibrating with the steady beat of birds’ wings. Judging by the sound they were making, I knew I could expect large birds. The first formation held only two of them, followed fairly closely by a second formation. Flying tightly together, the geese were suddenly past me, on their way to some unknown destination. And the silence settled once more as I turned right and headed back up the shoreline through snow that reached me almost to my knees.

On my way back, I imagined myself a lone hunter from ages past, slowly making my way across the frozen landscape in search of food and shelter. There were Elves nearby, I well knew. A small nomadic tribe whose tracks I had previously seen by the lake, where they had stopped to eat but a day past. But I did not expect to find them – humans never do. No, my only comfort was in knowing that their presence meant that there would be game in the area. Deer, perhaps, or a hare.

And thus, the brave hunter continued wandering around until nightfall, when he returned home for a proper dinner. But the point of all this, is that it is truly remarkably beautiful in Slottsskogen right now. It really does feel like you have crossed into another realm when you leave the urban landscape of the city, and head into the frozen world in Slottsskogen. The weather we have had these last few days, with low temperatures and lots of snow, has truly transformed Slottsskogen, making it a place you really do not want to miss. So, don your best winter boots and your warmest clothes, grab your camera and head out into the world. And who knows, perhaps you may even find traces of the Elves or other magical beings of the wild.

Movie + Bar= true?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Hey students!

Have you  ever thought about watching a movie in a bar? Ordering some drinks chatting to some new people in a lounge enviroment while watching a documentry? Well if you haven’t here is your chance to try it! In Gothenburg we have a local pub called the Doc Lounge a place where you exactly do that of written above!

Doc Lounge was born in Malmö 2006 as an initiative of the documentary filmmaker Frederick Gertten to create a vibrant venue with a documentary film in the middle. The theory is simple. Documentary is not a narrow genre, it is wide and there is a large audience. And documentaries are fun to see together.

Doc Lounge is a club open to everyone who loves documentaries, soft-bar atmosphere, soft sofas, carpets and pillows, live music, interesting conversations, chill out djs and more. Every Tuesday all this can be yours for only 60kr. The goal is to show the world’s best documentaries, the film we get from our friends in the international documentary film world.

In Gothenburg we are on ‘House of Win-Win’ (3rd Långg. 13B, opposite the Market Hall brig) every Tuesday at 19.00. Movie Start 20:00. But come on time is often full. Come on!

Dining in Göteborg- Mañana

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Looking for somewhere to take your Valentine’s date or hold a big Spanish birthday dinner for your friends? Even if you just want to go out for a glass of wine and have something small to eat, Spanish Mañana is the place to be! This hip and incredably popular restaurant/bar is not too expensive and have a menu of tasty tapas. Their slogan says “Easy food & happy people”  and that’s exactly what you find in Mañana!

The first opened Mañana restaurant, situated in central Göteborg,  is always crowded, filled with young buissness poeple having an after work glass of wine. Why not make a quick visit here? The second one, opened this Automn, is not as hip but more cosy- situated in the old and cosy district Majorna. A mix of different tapas is the perfect dinner to share with your date or between friends, and on the menu you find tapas dishes like chorizo, calamares and goat cheese salad with beetrote. Due to the popularity you need to book a table at least 2 weeks in advance, but trust me- it’s worth it!

Party Tip of the week!

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

tran

So in the midst of this blistering cold weather here in Gothenburg, why not party all out like if it’s in the sunshine states? This week’s club guide let me introduce Tranquilo Bar & Resturant.

Tranquilo Bar & Resturant is big bar/restaurant situated right by kungportsplatsen just in front of the Saluhallen I the center of Gothenburg. Tranquilo is bar inspired by the exotic South American culture and the sunshine relaxing feeling. The walls are painted red, orange with a touch sunset colour. Downstairs at Tranquilo there is large a dance space along with lots of comfortable seats as well.

During night’s you can order some really nice tropical drinks such as the traditional Tranquilo Twist, Pina colada, mojitos etc.

The music played at Tranquilo is pretty mixed however mostly with a slight touch of South American inspired salsa, latinmusik and house music.

It’s a nice local club, not as noisy as the other larger nightclubs, a great place to go if you’re looking to hang out with your friends and socialize over some nice food or tropical drinks ;)

During weekend nights it’s usually a pretty crowded club where many Swedes go wash away the cold and have a change of nature.
