The Native: Ostkakan

On the 14th of November; Sweden celebrates the National day of Ostkaka (Curd Cake), a dessert that has been around since 1600 and has made a guest appearance in several of Astrid Lindgren's stories. This national day was created by the association Ostkakans vänner in 2004 to increase awareness of the delicious dessert in Sweden and in Europe.

It's important to not confuse Ostkakan with the American cheesecake; the two desserts are made differently.

Thought of the Week: Music Mind-Expansion

The music scene in Gothenburg has been something I have yet to master. Coming from a place in the States where an innovative music scene has been alive for many years, I'm hoping gradually exploring the venues this Swedish city has to offer will be a audibly rewarding experience. I had known about the existence of Way Out West (which, perhaps, next summer I'll try to attend, depending on the line-up), but until then, what is there left? And what else is there?

While I ...

Discovering Sweden: Getting Over Evening Class Exhaustion

Despite the convenience of their timing, evening classes can be hard. Whether it is having three hours grouped in one weekly session, or the sudden onset of afternoon exhaustion, getting through evening classes is a tough thing that sometimes requires some serious strategy in any country. Sweden is no exception, but man—this place does kick it up a notch.

First, the cold. I’m sure this changes in the spring when it starts to warm up again (and by spring, I suppose I mean, like, June), ...
